SWANBAD PRESS

Jordan Swan, of Swanbad Press, a relief printmaker based in Anchorage, Alaska. She has dabbled in many art forms throughout the years before discovering her true passion for linocut relief prints in 2019.  Living in Alaska, Jordan is constantly inspired by the fantastic abundance of scenery, flora, and fauna. It took several years for Jordan to find a medium that resonated with her as an artist. In discovering her passion for linocut relief printmaking, she has come to appreciate more of the creative process and each step involved. The complexity of each step in creating a linocut print forces the artist to slow down, and the permanence of each line carved takes patience and a steady hand. This includes drawing the image, transferring it to the linoleum block, and carving away negative space to produce the lines, textures, and contrast of the piece. Once carved, the block is rolled over with thin layers of ink and pressed onto paper to reveal the art print.

What is a Linocut Print?

Linocut is a form of relief printmaking. An image is carved into a block of linoleum. That block is then rolled over with ink so that only the non-carved areas are inked. Paper is then pressed onto the inked area to reveal the mirror image on the page.
